Thanks to support from the Prince of Wales Charitable Fund, we’re delighted to announce a new pilot series of art workshops aimed at teenagers (13+) and adults.

Beginning on Saturday 8th October, we’ll host a workshop every Saturday from 1.30-3pm this month! Book your free place at any one or all of the workshops by emailing [email protected] or calling 02890330920.

This series of four workshops will be a beginners introduction to important movements in contemporary art, and the influential artists who were part of them.

Participants will get the opportunity to work using a range of media:  acrylic paint; paint sticks and markers; watercolour; and printmaking.

Week One: De Stilj and Piet Mondrian

A nice simple introduction to acrylic paint. In this workshop you will be learning about and taking inspiration from Piet Mondrian. We will create acrylic paintings on canvas in the style of ‘De Stijl’, which is Dutch for ‘the style’.

Week Two: Fauvism and Henri Matisse

In this workshop you will learn about and take inspiration from Fauvism and artist Henri Matisse. We will create our own fauvist painting in the style of Matisse using paint markers and paint sticks on paper.

Week Three: Surrealism, Leonora Carrington and Frida Kahlo

In this workshop you will be learning about the hugely influential art movement, Surrealism, and taking inspiration from Leonora Carrington and Frida Kahlo, two very famous female surrealists. We will create a watercolour painting of our own dreamscape or fantasy world on watercolour paper.

Week Four: Expressionism and Die Brücke

In this workshop we will be taking inspiration from the art movement Expressionism. In particular, we will be looking at a group of German Expressionists who formed Die Brücke. We will be creating relief prints inspired by the artwork of Die Brücke, using printing ink and polystyrene and printing onto paper and tote bags.

Each workshop will be led by GTG Gallery Assistant and artist Katharine Paisley, and are suitable for all levels of ability. As always, they are completely free of charge and all materials are provided. Plus, we’ll provide drinks & snacks!

Book your free place at any one or all of the workshops by emailing [email protected] or calling 02890330920.

Come along to gain some knowledge, skills and confidence about contemporary art, and have fun expressing yourself!
