On Monday 11th October the GTG team attended the virtual Family Friendly Museum Awards 2021, where Golden Thread Gallery was nominated for Best Small Museum! The prestigious awards were created by Kids in Museums in 2004, and have been growing every year, with a new category, Best Accessible Museum, added for 2021.

The national awards, now in its 15th year, are awarded annually to museums, galleries, historic homes or heritage sites in the UK that go the extra mile to provide a great experience for families. Each year hundreds of public nominations are whittled down to a shortlist by an expert panel. The finalists are visited by undercover family judges during the summer holidays, with their experiences deciding the winners.

The awards were presented by arts broadcaster Philip Mould OBE, President of Kids in Museums, and during the ceremony we got to chat with some of the other nominees in our category. We heard some brilliant and inspiring ideas from each other about making families welcome!

As our category was announced, we heard some of the wonderful feedback from visitors to the Gallery who loved our friendly team, comfy seats, Junior Gallery space and the Gallery Explorer packs!

We were so proud and delighted to be shortlisted, especially in awards voted for by families and visitors. It was wonderful to meet so many other great organisations who are passionate about sharing the joys of arts and heritage with children and families.

Huge congratulations to the lovely team at Bailiffgate Museum at Alnwick who not only won our category of Best Small Museum, but also won Best Museum overall.

Thanks to Kids in Museums for a lovely afternoon at the ceremony!
