The Bright World

The Bright World
An exhibition of works by William McKeown

The Golden Thread Gallery is pleased to present ‘The Bright World’ a new installation made for the gallery by William McKeown.
William McKeown often presents his paintings and drawings in constructions based on actual rooms from experience. His interest in painting and drawing lies in its potential to create a window onto illusionary space and the consequent relationship of this space to wall, structure, containment, culture and surface.

‘I am not interested in the expression of painting or in its historical position as the paradigm of fine art practice. I am interested in painting for its ability to create a
window out of structure. Painting can create an expansive, open and inclusive space, somewhere for the imagination to go. My interest in painting is anti-structure, anti-surface.’

William McKeown had a solo exhibition in Belfast in 2002 with ‘The Sky Begins at our Feet’ at Ormeau Baths Gallery; since then his solo projects have been: ‘Forever Paintings’ at the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin; ‘The Room at the Horizon’, Projects Arts Centre, Dublin; ‘Cloud Cuckoo-land’ at Sleeper in Edinburgh; ‘Cloud Cuckoo-land’, Gallery 2, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, as part of ‘The Paradise’ series. He had a solo show ‘In an Open Room’ at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in 2001.
