Back with a bang for 2021, our series of online discussions about improving diversity and inclusion in the arts in NI continues on Thursday 28th Jan. We’re delighted to be joined by a fantastic guest speaker for this event, artist and activist Cuthbert ‘Tura’ Arutura.
The session’s goal is to explore more closely the specific, often complex, Northern Ireland context when it comes to improving diversity and inclusion within the Arts. There are unique difficulties and constraints here for arts and cultural organisations, including a long history of Government underfunding for the sector – but are there also specific reasons for optimism in NI in terms of opportunities to make real change?

Our Guest Speaker Cuthbert Arutura
Cuthbert is a Zimbabwean national who has lived in Ireland for nearly 30 years. Throughout that time he has been an active proponent of cultural and cross-cultural activities in Ireland, the UK and Europe. Possibly, uniquely, he is an Irish speaker and dancer and has a deep interest in all aspects of Gaelic culture such as ancient poetry and dance. In 2002 he won the Broadcasting Diversity Award for Different Worlds, a magazine programme featuring multi-cultural and social issues. In 2013 Steip le Tura a documentary about Cuthbert learning the ancient dance of Ireland was nominated for a Celtic Media Award. In 1994 he founded the African Cultural Centre (NIACC) for the improvement of African lives in Northern Ireland as part of the Peace & Reconciliation Cross Community process. He was a founder member of the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities in 1997. In 2002 he was awarded Top 40 Under 40 in Ireland followed, early in 2018, by an invitation by Culture Ireland and Comhaltas to participate in promoting Irish culture throughout Britain.
