GreatArt Quest – Belfast
Children from Hazelwood Integrated Primary School, Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagáian, Holy Family Primary School and Glengormley Integrated Primary School will have the opportunity to engage with both Golden Thread Gallery, visual Artists and Story tellers and explore collage as a tool for understanding and storytelling.
From September 2016 to January 2017, Golden Thread Gallery is programming a series of exhibitions using collage as a starting point. Collage shows us how to make new worlds and how to make sense of our own cut and paste culture. It is a great medium for creative play. Anyone can have fun with collage and it is the ultimate tool for creating something that is bigger than the sum of its parts from random disparate images and building narratives within that. It creates opportunities for audiences to experience information simultaneously, bridging media, connecting time and place, and creating new realities by juxtaposing the familiar. This exploration into the potential of collage is the perfect opportunity to bring in younger audiences who are used to flicking through information from different sources and creating associations between random facts and pictures.
For the Great Art Quest we are planning to explore the techniques used by Sean Hillen and encourage the school children to use their own experiences to make their own photomontages and collages.
The artwork created by the children will be exhibited along with selected Sean Hillen prints that were the points of inspiration for the children. This exhibition could be launched in our Project Space (dates t.b.c.) and then toured around libraries in Northern Ireland – particularly the libraries in the vicinity of participating schools.
