Migrant Workers Festival

May 2009

Artists: Majella Clancy Benji De Burca

Project Description: To complement the Agent Absurd exhibition and attract a wider audience, we developed a Migrant Workers Festival to celebrate cultural diversity and the contributions of migrant workers and ethnic minority communities.

Activities included:

A series of 7 billboard and banner making workshops with Kameleon Polish Youth Group and Belfast City Council Youth Forum (workshops began in March and continued till mid April). As well as bringing Polish and local young people together to work towards a shared aim, workshop outcomes included a new banner for the ICTU Migrant Workers Unit and a Billboard celebrating diversity. The banner designed by the young people led the annual Mayday Rally (attended by approx 8,000 people).

A Love Poetry Hate Racism event in Belfast Central Library

A Migrant Workers Employment & Welfare Advice Clinic

Two panel discussions: Perceptions of the Other and The Absurdity of Global Economics

A Polish Cultural Evening

An exhibition of young peoples art to showcase the workshop processes.

Festival Partners:

the Golden Thread Gallery

the Irish Congress of Trade Unions

the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities

Belfast & District Trades Union Council

Kameleon Youth Group

Polish Community Centre Cooltura

We received funding from Belfast City Council's Community Festivals Fund to realise the project and we also linked in with Polska! Week: a week long showcase of Polish cultural and artistic expression across all platforms.
